Make Your Own Cyanotype Bandana

Create a one-of-a-kind bandana using one of the oldest forms of photography-Cyanotype. Also known as sun printing, this process blends chemistry, art, and nature for a satisfyingly hands-on project that is fun for everyone!

The BASIC KIT includes one cotton bandana, two cotton practice swatches, cyanotype chemistry, protective gloves, and glass beads for holding your objects in place.

Add-Ons

The kit comes with enough solution to create additional items, so we have included options to purchase socks and/or silk handkerchiefs for further cyanotype experimentation. Use the drop-down menu to add additional pieces to the basic kit.

Add two SILK HANKIES and we'll include two 100% silk handkerchiefs. Each is 11"x11" square with rolled hem. (+ $7.00)

Add a pair of SOCKS and we'll include a pair of bamboo socks that fit adult size 6-9. These are very soft and squishy and feel great! 94% Bamboo rayon and 6% Spandex. (+ $10.00)

Add both a pair of SOCKS and two SILK HANKIES for an additional $17.00.

FAQs

Q: Is there enough solution to do more items than what comes in the basic kit?

A: Yes, if you are careful and only mix what you need for each use, you'll have a little extra to create 1-3 more small projects.  Check out our optional add-ons for items we think make great additional projects!

Q: Can I only do this project on a sunny day?

A: This can be done on a cloudy day too but you should avoid precipitation.  It must be done outside because glass windows can sometimes block the UV light that triggers the chemical reaction that turns the molecules blue!

Q: Do I need supplies beyond what comes in the kit?

A: You'll need a flat portable work surface ( a flattened cardboard box works well) and a small non-food-use bowl or container to mix the solution in.

Wear clothes that you can get messy.  Gather your own objects for printing- we love collecting leaves outside, everyday objects like pasta, snack foods, and tools.

Handwash the cyanotype bandana in cold water with like colors.

Similar to natural dyes, sweat and skin oils may shift color. Cyanotype fabrics are also prone to fading, we call this “Beausage” (Beauty+Usage). It is part of their charm.

About Our Cotton Bandanas

  • OUR NEW FABRIC

    100% Organic Cotton Voile

You’ll notice this fabric is a touch lighter than our previous cambric. It’s a bit sheer when held up to the light but will still be opaque when you fold or roll it up to wear as a bandana. What’s nice about voile is the drape and super soft feeling, making it effortless to tie on without too much fuss.

  • OUR NEW PRINTING PROCESS

    Running Yardage

As a textile designer, it is a thrill to have my designs printed in yardage. More importantly, this development improves our final product in the following ways.

    • Design shows on both sides
    • Less waste
    • More colors
    • Full bleed printing

  • OUR FACTORY PARTNER

    Family Owned in India

Our cotton bandanas are now made at a fair and ethical family-owned facility in Mumbai, India that is SEDEX 4-Pillar Certified.

We’ve been working with them for the past couple of years on our silk bandanas. With the whole LCT bandana family under one roof, we have expanded our capabilities as outlined above and reached our goals to further reduce waste and carbon emissions while maintaining consistent inventory.

I was able to visit the facilities and better acquaint myself with the team this past September. Call me old-fashioned, but nothing is better than meeting face-to-face. I gained transparency for my business and was warmly welcomed as a guest and friend.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, LAST CHANCE?

What’s in a name? Probably lots of good stories and feelings, maybe some not much more than abstract notions, attached in all sorts of ways to that thing we’ve named.

When I first moved to California I was really struck by the vastness of this American West. That first drive across the country and my earliest explorations of the mountains and deserts were peppered with signs that read: “NO GAS OR SERVICE FOR 100 MILES”. Something about retelling the tale of an empty gas tank with nothing around but empty road, and how you unstuck yourself somehow, will stir up a deep love for the great wide open west.

I find myself making one last stop in the last little town on the edge of wilderness to pick up a box of matches, a fuel canister, some chapstick, or just an unspoken peace of mind that I know where I’m headed.

It’s these places that have inspired the name. A Last Chance to gather the things we rely on, to trust what we’ve got and to be certain those things will be a part of whatever comes down the road.
